Do you really need sunscreen when you stay inside? Learn how UVA behaves through windows, when indoor sunscreen makes sense, and when your exposure is likely minimal.

f you are spending the whole day at home, putting on sunscreen can feel unnecessary. You are not at the beach. You are not walking around under the midday sun. Maybe you are sitting at a desk, making coffee, and moving between rooms.

Yet being indoors does not always mean your skin is completely protected from sunlight.

The answer depends on something surprisingly simple: where you spend your day.

What Actually Gets Through a Window?

Sunlight contains different types of ultraviolet radiation. UVA and UVB are the two that matter most for skin.

UVB is strongly associated with sunburn. Ordinary glass blocks most of it.

UVA is different. It penetrates more deeply into the skin and contributes to premature skin aging and skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that UVA can pass through window glass.

That means sitting beside a bright window for hours is not quite the same as sitting in a room with little direct sunlight.

Think about someone working from home with their desk directly beside a large sunny window. Their face and hands may receive sunlight from the same direction every afternoon, five days a week. Each individual exposure may seem small, but sun damage can accumulate over time.

On the other hand, someone working several meters from the windows with curtains partly closed has a very different level of exposure.

The American Cancer Society notes that UV coming through windows probably does not pose a large risk to most people unless they spend long periods close to a window receiving direct sunlight.

That distinction matters.

Using sunscreen indoors is particularly reasonable if your desk, sofa, or favorite chair sits beside a window that receives strong daylight.

Driving counts as well. Vehicle glass blocks much of the UVB, but UVA protection varies between different windows. This is one reason people who spend many hours driving should still think about sun protection.

Sunscreen may also deserve more attention if you are trying to control melasma or persistent dark spots. Visible light from the sun can contribute to pigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide for people who need extra protection against visible light related pigmentation.

For everyday UV protection, dermatologists recommend a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Broad spectrum means it protects against both UVA and UVB.

What About Computer and Phone Screens?

This is where skincare advice can become confusing.

You may have seen claims that anyone using a laptop needs sunscreen because of blue light from the screen. Current research does not support treating normal electronic screen exposure like sunlight.

A systematic review examining blue light from electronic devices did not identify it as a demonstrated hazard for skin pigmentation, melasma worsening, or skin aging based on the available evidence. Sunlight produces far more meaningful light exposure.

In other words, the sunny window beside your computer matters far more than the computer screen itself.
